Why Every Runner Should Try Streaking

Streaking, to a runner, means undertaking an extended ‘streak’ of daily runs.

I had my share of crazy days in college, but I have obviously never streaked in the sense of running across an open field naked. Obviously, that kind of streaking is illegal, so I would never publicly recommend it (what you do on your own time is your business, of course). Streaking, in regards to this article, refers to taking extended runs, every day, for a certain amount of time. In order to be considered an official ‘streak’, a runner has to run at least one mile every calendar day for at least one year in duration.

That definition comes straight from the USRSA (United States Run Streak Association), and as it turns out there are plenty of people doing this, some runners even claiming streaks of 25 years or more.

The problem with running streaks is that you can’t always predict your schedule, or the weather, or your health, but I will say that committing to something like this will not only do wonders for your health, but for your self esteem as well. After all, how many of us can commit to anything for a full year? Running is also a great time for reflection, so I can only imagine all the great ideas one could come up with, running every single day.

That being said, you don’t have to commit to a full year to do it. Try streaking every day for a week, or a month, and see if you reap any positive benefits. It’s a great excuse to get in shape for summer, or at the very least, to buy some good running shoes!
