As a female who has always been predisposed to sports, I can tell you first hand that women and men are often not on equal playing ground. 45% of the athletes competing in Rio this year were women, including Serena Williams, Simone Biles, and Katie Ledecky (shout-out to my fellow female athletes).

The founder of the Olympics, French aristocrat Baron Pierre de Coubertin said: “the solemn and periodic exaltation of male athleticism” with “female applause as reward.”

Since the dawn of time, women have fought for equality, against the assumption that we are the weaker sex. This misguided idea is prevalent in the workplace, in the home, and especially in sports. Smithsonianmag.com recently wrote a wonderful article on the women’s movement to be seen as equals, and I am honored to be quoted.

The article covers the history of female athletes in The Olympics, equality and gender issues, and of course, the rise of the modern sportswoman. The full article can be accessed HERE, but the main idea is that we have come a long way in the fight to equality, but there are still many social stigmas and cultural biases that prevent female athletes from reaching their full potential.
