Could Full-Fat Dairy Be Healthier For Women?

New research suggests that full-fat dairy products might be better for women’s health.

I don’t know when the war on dairy began, but I do know that mothers everywhere embraced it wholeheartedly. I grew up drinking whole milk, but by the time I reached adulthood experts had decided that it, as well as cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products could clog our arteries, so for the sake of health I was happy to switch to lower fat options, and have even been known to drink almond milk and other milk substitutes from time to time.

Recent studies have been exploring the relationship between dairy and obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes, and found that people who consume high-fat dairy products are actually less likely to be obese, and no more susceptible to heart disease or diabetes than those who don’t.

In a 2016 study, researchers looked at data from over 200,000 people and found that there was no real link to high-fat dairy foods and cardiovascular disease, which is important since heart disease is the number one killer of women.

One of the original problems with the research into full-fat dairy products is that scientists didn’t take into consideration that removing full-fat dairy would create cravings for other things, specifically food that is high in sugar, which is ultimately much worse for you.

There are still more studies to be done, and obviously I wouldn’t suggest you start consuming whole milk and cheese by the wagon. Scientists are now suggesting that it is okay to swap out your skim milk for whole, or choose a full-fat yogurt as a snack, especially if you are considering a sugar-filled alternative.

Every woman’s body is different, so obviously you want to do what works for you. I am just saying that contrary to popular belief, studies show that adding some full-fat dairy back into your diet may actually help you lead a healthier life.
