Are you Drinking Too Much Coffee?

We all love our java, but how much caffeine is too much?

coffee consumption

As a working mom, I would never eschew anyone their morning cup of coffee. For most American’s coffee is either the reason they get up in the morning, or the reason they stay awake during the day. Caffeine, when administered responsibly with antioxidants present in coffee can actually have positive health effects for you, including reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, or type 2 diabetes.

Currently, the accepted limit for coffee in the average, healthy adult is 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, or roughly four 8-ounce cups of coffee.

This isn’t a hard fast rule, meaning that some people have different reactions to caffeine, so if a cup of green tea makes you jittery, four cups of coffee will probably send you into the stratosphere.

Another thing to pay attention to is your sleep cycle. If consuming coffee during the day is messing with your sleep at night, its best to cut back on the caffeine in favor of a good nights sleep. After all, if you are drinking coffee because you are tired, perhaps more sleep might help too.

As always, make sure you listen to your body and don’t overdo it. In a world where there’s a Starbucks on every corner, its important to know your limits and stick to them.
