Five Eye Mistakes You Shouldn’t Make

Being mindful of your eye health is integral to a healthy overall lifestyle.

Our eyes are really important. I know that is probably the understatement of the year, but eyes are one of the things we take for granted in our everyday lives, as we utilize these organs for at least half of every day.

That being said, aside from keeping our annual checkups, sometimes we can get careless with our eye health.

Here is a list of five things you should NOT do, to maintain optimal eye health, including detecting cancer.

Do NOT miss your eye exams. Even though they only happen annually, a doctor can tell you things about your vision that you would have no other way of knowing.

Do NOT sleep with your contacts in. Recently there was a viral story online about how 29 contacts were pulled out of an elderly woman’s eye. Overnight contacts can also block oxygen from reaching your corneas, so unless you’re taking a quick nap, its best to remove the contacts.

Do NOT put eyeliner on the interior of your eyelashes. It’s a popular thing to line the bottom of your eye with black liner, but it can transfer harmful bacteria into your eyes, so it’s best to stay outside your lash line in terms of makeup.

Do NOT use too many eyedrops. Eyedrops work by constricting blood vessels, but they can actually make redness worse in the long-run if used excessively. If your red eyes are a serious problem, see a doctor. Otherwise, be sparing on the Visine.

Do NOT forget to wear UVA and UVB blocking sunglasses year round, even in winter. No matter how bleak the weather seems, you can still experience corneal burns, skin, cancer, and cataracts, so it’s best to keep the sunglasses out regardless.
