As an orthopaedic surgeon with plenty of experience in the operating room, I can tell you that it is a vastly male-dominated field. Half of the medical students in the United States are female, and yet only 13% go into orthopaedics, and account for only 4% of members of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
