How to Update Your Skincare Regimen this Summer

Your skincare regimen should change with the seasons.

I probably don’t have to tell you that your skin reacts to different weather and temperatures in different ways. During the cold winter months your skin is likely to dry out, so you may need to focus more on moisturizing from the inside out. During the summer months you will likely sweat more, so you need to focus on cleansing, especially in terms of leaving makeup caked on your face overnight.

We’ve been hiding inside our homes for the past year, so it’s likely that we’ve forgotten to prioritize our skin. Fear not, however. Summer is here, the masks are coming off, vaccinations are on the rise, and it’s time to put our best faces forward in terms of a skincare routine.

Here are a few ways to update and upgrade your skincare regimen this summer.

Sunscreen all day, every day. Nicole Kidman looks the way she does because she bathes in sunscreen every morning. The weather doesn’t matter, a strong SPF should be the last thing you put on every morning. You should also reapply during the day, especially if you are going to be outdoors. I can’t stress enough how important it is to find a sunscreen you like, and use it religiously.

Try Vitamin C. Adding a vitamin C product into your regimen as a topical antioxidant will offer another layer of protection against the sun. It should be applied right after cleansing.

Use lightweight foundation. The last thing you want is a cakey makeup face on a hot summer day. Switch to lightweight products, with humectants and emollients for a balanced look.

Use aloe on sunburns immediately. On the off chance that you forget your sunscreen, treat any burns with aloe immediately after. The quicker you address the problem, the faster you will heal.

Exfoliate as gently as possible. When it comes to exfoliation, be as gentle as you can afford to be. If you can avoid products without salicylic acid, please do. If your skin is more oily and requires it, choose a product with moisturizing properties. Also, you should only exfoliate at night, because it might make your skin more prone to burn.
