This winter we have experienced record lows of cold weather. Call it global warming if you want (since that’s what it is), but every year it seems to be getting colder, so we have to do everything in our power to try and stay warm.

Layering helps, as well as piling on down jackets and thermal underwear, but did you know that you can also keep warm by eating certain spices?

The foods on this list will help add a little warmth to your body, because in times like these, we need all the help we can get.

Ginger- Not only does it aid in digestion, but it helps warm the body (taken in small quantities, of course).

Garlic– Garlic is well known as an infection-fighter, but it also improves circulation and helps keep you warm during freezing temperatures.

Turmeric– Turmeric is well known for it’s healthy properties as it reduces inflammation in the body, and also helps you retain warmth.

Pepper– Both white and black pepper help fight infection with antioxidants, and keep the body warm in cold weather.

Cinnamon– You can put cinnamon in almost anything, as it increases your metabolism and helps you generate heat.

Honey– Honey is great for warmth, so adding it to your tea, oatmeal, or even certain meals is highly recommended. I know it isn’t technically a spice, but don’t let that stop you from adding it to anything and everything.
